The explosion of inner-city running crews over the past decade has been driven in part by the quest for PBs, but also by the sense of community, activism and mental wellbeing inherent in just lacing up and running with friendly faces. In London the likes of Track Mafia and Run Dem Crew have opened up the sport, while in Toronto, Pace and Mind were formed to fill the gap between local fun run groups and elite race-orientated clubs. The group’s simple unifying principle – that people can run faster than they think if they put their minds to it and are supported correctly – has inspired hundreds of runners ever since.
