Edition 03

Welcome to the third edition of 21 Silver Linings.
Our annual collection of stories about innovation
and positivity is rooted in one simple, powerful
idea – that design and creativity make thriving
communities, nations, and planet.
This year celebrates how community and
collaboration generate positivity. Read about
the urban developers rethinking housing to
prevent families leaving cities, the rooftop spaces
reclaimed for green initiatives, Kpop fans driving
eco-activism, community takeovers saving
independent music venues, and the typographers
helping us see more clearly. In each case, ordinary
people and creative inspiration are coming
together to drive positive change.

The continent-wide ECRN is working with community andactivist groups to transform unused space on buildings in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Belfast, Antwerp, Nicosia, Gothenburg, Chemnitz, and Faro. Some initiatives are environmental (water collection, solar panel installation, Rotterdam’s Luchtpark Hofbogen elevated park etc), while others are cultural: Barcelona’s Terrats en Cultura festival turned rooftops into concert spaces, while Nicosia’s 1010 Hall is a cultural space with a focus on stargazing thanks to the high-powered telescope mounted on the roof for public use. Moving roofs away from their current state as solid, dark heat absorbent blocks can also work to reduce the ‘heat island’ effect produced by densely built urban areas.

‘Comic Sans: a joke to designers – a tool to dyslexia.’ So announced Dyslexia Scotland as they unveiled a campaign to remind graphic designers that when communicating, the aesthetic choices they make often result in certain communities being excluded. And in the case of dyslexics – who may perceive text as overwhelmingly chaotic – this means around 6.3 million people, or around 10% of the British population. The campaign was backed by WeTransfer and sought to remind designers that even if they don’t necessarily fall in love with the typeface, ‘beautiful design and being dyslexia-friendly don’t need to be mutually exclusive.’

The explosion of inner-city running crews over the past decade has been driven in part by the quest for PBs, but also by the sense of community, activism and mental wellbeing inherent in just lacing up and running with friendly faces. In London the likes of Track Mafia and Run Dem Crew have opened up the sport, while in Toronto, Pace and Mind were formed to fill the gap between local fun run groups and elite race-orientated clubs. The group’s simple unifying principle – that people can run faster than they think if they put their minds to it and are supported correctly – has inspired hundreds of runners ever since.

Amsterdam’s Project Fearless has a simple, if bold, mission: ‘To enable more girls to become scientists, engineers, builders, makers, creators or to get to the top of any ladder they wish to climb.’ And to facilitate this, the group hosts everything from mind and movement classes, hands on creation from printmaking to woodwork, and courses in volunteering and community leadership that bring girls together and teach them to be brave, risk-taking and adventurous. ‘This isn’t about simply teaching girls self-defence, or how to build or mend something. It’s about setting them up for their futures.’

Since its first meetings in 1926, Bradford Movie Makers club has worked with local amateur filmmakers, supporting them through their cinematic endeavours, but also providing a support network in times of loneliness, hardship and bereavement. With the club struggling to survive, it’s appearance as subject of Kim Hopkins’ acclaimed new documentary A Bunch of Amateurs has come just at the right time. The club has been profiled on BBC Breakfast and Radio 4 and received so many visitors that its website crashed, while Baz Luhrmann has declared himself a fan and asked to meet the group.

In recognition of the unique challenges faced by ethnically diverse disabled creatives working in the arts, the pioneering Disability Arts Online (DAO) group worked through 2022 on its inaugural ONYX project. This pilot scheme saw 10 creatives ‘who share the lived experience of disability and racism’ be supported, resourced and mentored through the creation of new work for publication, and culminated in the delivery of 12 new artistic presentations across the UK. The scheme not only networked a community of often excluded artists, but also widened access their work to audiences.

Recent research by male suicide awareness group HUMEN showed that men spend four hours a week at the pub, discussing sport and other stereotypically masculine pursuits, but only 15% would talk about how they really feel. To address this, HUMEN partnered with 15 pubs to place trained mental health professionals in these establishments to encourage men to talk in more relaxed surroundings. The group also hosted a mental health pilgrimage, with participants undertaking a 5,151m walk, each step representing a man who lost their life to suicide in the past year. ‘Pubs are the cornerstone of many communities,’ say the organisers. ‘The perfect place to encourage dialogue.’
