For 11 years, Bristol Energy Cooperative has carried out small-scale solar power installations across the city. But this year saw the group’s largest project to date, when a 7000 square metre roof became the site of a flagship, people-powered solar scheme. The former engineering works was already slated to be converted into a second site for a council-owned film studio, and with BEC onboard, this will now be predominantly powered by a vast array of 2,000 solar PV panels generating a combined 1MW of electricity. Previous BEC projects have been funded through community share offers, with £15m raised since 2011.
